Survey readiness for adult day care centers

Adult day care centers in Florida are licensed by AHCA under Chapter 429, Part III, Florida Statutes, rule chapter 59A-16 of the Florida Administrative Code, and the general licensing rules in Chapter 408, Part II. A survey looks at the whole day: who is on staff, what is in each participant’s file, what people eat, and whether the building is safe and comfortable.

What surveyors focus on

• Staffing. Supervision during all hours of operation, staffing levels for your attendance, first aid and CPR coverage, and complete staff files.
• Participant files. What you collect at admission, the health information you keep current, and how often files are updated.
• Participant rights and discharge. Your rights policy, and how you handle discharges.
• Program and meals. Your activity program, meals and snacks, and attendance records.
• The building. Space, comfort and temperature, and safe storage of medications and chemicals.
• Emergency preparedness. Your emergency plan and fire drills.

Where centers commonly slip

• Participant files that are not kept up to date after admission.
• Health documentation that is already out of date when a participant starts.
• Drill records with gaps.
• Staffing that looks fine on paper but runs thin at busy times, such as drop-off and pick-up.
